Obtaining Proper Identification

If you lack proper identification, you should make every effort to obtain it. If you need to use credible witnesses as your identification, please remember that those witnesses are swearing, under oath (just like in a court room), that it is difficult or impossible for you to obtain proper identification. In many cases, obtaining proper ID (or a replacement ID) is really quite simple.

Even if you don't drive, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) can issue you a standard ID card. Before applying for an ID card, make sure you have your Social Security Number and documents that prove your birth date and legal presence in the United States.

You can also apply for a United States Passport. A passport is an excellent option for minors (under 18) who need their signatures notarized and otherwise cannot obtain a DMV license or ID. (Though the California DMV will issue an ID card to a person of any age provided the have the proper documentation.)

If you are not a US citizen, or have lost your foreign passport, you should contact your country's local Embassy, Consulate or Diplomatic Office for assistance. Please note that Matrícula Consular cards are NOT an acceptable form of identification for notarization purposes.
